Dedicated eye exams using advanced diagnostic technology to help patients with diabetes achieve healthy, clear vision.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the United States. High blood sugar levels damage the delicate blood vessels in your retina, and without regular monitoring, this damage can progress silently—often with no symptoms until significant vision loss has already occurred.
At Riz Eye Care, we want your vision to be at its best—that's why we offer comprehensive diabetic eye exams to help you achieve healthy and clear vision. Our team uses advanced diagnostic equipment to detect early signs of diabetic eye disease before irreversible damage occurs.

When blood sugar (glucose) levels remain elevated over time, the tiny blood vessels in your retina become weakened and damaged. This leads to a condition called diabetic retinopathy—the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in adults.
Damaged blood vessels can leak blood and fluid into the retina, causing swelling and blurred vision. In advanced stages, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the retina's surface—these fragile vessels bleed easily, potentially causing severe vision loss or even retinal detachment.
When fluid leaks into the macula (the center of your retina responsible for sharp vision), it causes diabetic macular edema (DME). This is the most common reason diabetic patients lose vision. Early detection through regular exams is key to preventing permanent damage.
Your A1C level reflects your average blood sugar over 2–3 months. When A1C levels fluctuate significantly—whether going up or coming down quickly—it causes the lens inside your eye to swell or shrink, resulting in temporary but noticeable changes in your prescription. This is why your glasses or contacts may seem off when your sugar is unstable. We typically recommend waiting until your A1C stabilizes before updating your prescription.
Beyond retinopathy, diabetes increases your risk of glaucoma (by up to 40%), cataracts (which develop earlier in diabetic patients), and optic nerve damage. A comprehensive diabetic eye exam screens for all of these conditions simultaneously.
Important: Diabetic retinopathy often has no early symptoms. By the time you notice changes, significant damage may have already occurred. Regular exams are your best defense.
While standard eye exams give you a general overview of your eye health, diabetic eye exams go much deeper. We use specialized technologies to get a complete, detailed view of your retina, retinal blood vessels, optic nerve, and macula—the areas most vulnerable to diabetic damage.
If you have diabetes, we typically recommend annual diabetic eye exams at minimum—and more frequently if any signs of retinopathy are detected. Patients with Type 1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes should all receive regular screenings.
Our ultra wide-field Optos scanning laser technology captures up to 200° of your retina in a single image—compared to just 45° with traditional cameras. This gives us a magnified, detailed look at your retinal blood vessels, allowing us to detect diabetic retinopathy, hemorrhages, and macular degeneration earlier than ever before.
Our thorough diagnostic process provides detailed findings that you can share with your primary care physician or endocrinologist to coordinate your overall diabetes care plan. Your eye health is a window into your systemic health—and we make sure your entire care team stays informed.
At Riz Eye Care, our diabetic eye exams are all about being thorough and ensuring we get the entire picture of your eye health. Whether you're newly diagnosed or have been managing diabetes for years, our team is here to protect your vision every step of the way.
